Mauritania

Project Objectives

Mauritania is poorly explored for mineral resources. The French carried out a phase 1 project in which they mapped and collected data in the country. The USGS is evaluating this data, filling in where needed, and performing a mineral assessment.

The project objective is to complete a mineral resource assessment of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The USGS is in a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Futures Group, who signed a contract with Mauritania, which received money from the World Bank. The mineral resource assessment will allow the Mauritanians to have a better understanding of their natural resources.

Relevance & Impact

For economic growth and self determination, it is important for Mauritania to know their natural resouce potential.

The USGS will evaluate previously collected data; collect new data where needed; provide GIS training to Mauritanian geologists; and provide mineral assessment and field training of a Mauritanian geologist.
