Central Region GIS & Information Management II

Project Objectives

The most important objective of this project is to provide geographic information systems and information management support to the Central Region Mineral Resources and Crustal Imaging and Characterization Teams and to conduct specialized GIS tasks that are not directly related to other program projects. The project will provide basic services required by team projects, including GIS support, GIS Laboratory development and maintenance (software and hardware), and contracting support. Support also includes helping staff and projects comply with USGS "publication requirements for digital map products". The project will also provide leadership for implementing and supporting NSDI (National Spatial Data Infrastructure) requirements, especially those related to metadata.

A second objective is to supply the teams with shared, full-featured hardware/software infrastructure to provide robust GIS, scientific visualization, modeling, and map production capabilities. The project also supports a shared GIS laboratory with workstations, digitizers, large-format color scanner, server-based and locally-installed GIS and graphics software (including ArcGIS, ArcInfo, Erdas IMAGINE, and DGI EarthVision), and a CD-ROM spatial data library. The project has the following defined tasks: (1) Project Management, (2) GIS Support and Information Management, (3) GIS Laboratory Services, and (4) Research and Development.

Relevance & Impact

Geographic information systems applications support and information management are critical for various projects of the Central Region Mineral Resources and Crustal Imaging and Characterization Teams. Project data integration, analysis, modeling, and products depend on this support.
