Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center
Project status is complete. Please check the CMERSC project list for currently active projects.
The objectives of the Sustainable Development of Industrial Minerals Project were (1) to develop new and emerging approaches, methods, and modeling applications in industrial minerals, (2) to conduct research on a variety of science research topics, (3) to provide a National perspective for scientific activities in industrial minerals, and (4) utilize a common, highly organized, web-based outlet for industrial minerals information.
The development of new and emerging approaches, methods, and modeling applications in industrial minerals as well as topical studies describing investigation of promising science research enhanced integrated science activities in and outside the USGS. The products that resulted from these studies advanced our development of lifecycle models for these deposits types, provided land management agencies with better geologic and minerals data on industrial minerals; identified potential environmental impacts from developing industrial minerals and geologic methods to mitigate or avoid those impacts; and identified minerals or mineral pathways that adversely impact the quality of soil, water and air in environments that may affect the health of humans, plants, animals, and food sources.
